Archibald Moon

Archibald Moon or A.B.L Moon as his CSA enlistment papers show joined on March 4, 1862 for a three year enlistment. He was sent to Richmond, Virginia and spent April and May of 1862 in the hospital due to chronic diarrhea which was common in the Army throughout the Civil War.

Upon discharge from the hospital he joined his regiment which was under the command of D.R Jones, Third Division, Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). During this time he was involved in the Seven Days Battles at the following locations during the timeframe of June 25 – July 1862.

  • Battle of Peach Orchard (Allen’s Farm) near Fair Oaks Station Va. – June 29th 1862
  • Battle of Savage Station Va. – June 29th 1862
  • Malvern Hill Va. – July 1st 1862

On July 23rd 1862 the 7th Georgia was transferred to the command of G.T Anderson AKA “Tige” Anderson. G.T. Anderson’s Brigade became part of D.R. Jones Division, Longstreet’s Command, Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). He was involved in the Campaign in Northern Virginia (Second Bull Run Campaign) at fought at these battles

  • Thoroughfare Gap Va. – August 28 1862
  • Manassas, Groveton Heights (Second Bull Run) – August 30 1862

On September 20th 1862 the 7th Georgia was added to Longstreet’s Corps still under the command of G.T Anderson AKA “Tige” Anderson of D.R. Jones Division, Longstreet’s Corps, Army of Northern Virginia (ANV).

The Maryland Campaign started on September 6 – September 22 and he fought at these battles.

  • Battle of South Mountain (Fox’s Gap) Md. – September 14th 1862
  • Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) Md. – September 16 and 17th

He was killed on the battlefield in the late morning on 17 September 1862, most likely in the West Woods, by a cannon shot on his right hip that tore his body in two. There are no records of where he is buried and most likely he was buried by the Union Army in the mass Confederate Grave.
